Studio 2
(assessment required)
Studio Art 2 is a project-based intermediate-to-advanced level class that focuses on life drawing and creative exploration. Designed for students who are ready to deepen their artistic practice, this course combines structured lessons with opportunities for personal expression. Projects in Studio Art 2 range from realism-focused pieces that emphasize precision and observation to exploratory works that challenge students to push boundaries and think outside the box.
The class incorporates a mix of instructor-led projects and student-chosen assignments, providing a balance of guidance and independence. Most projects span multiple sessions, allowing students to fully develop their ideas and refine their techniques. Between larger projects, students will participate in focused fundamental exercises designed to enhance their core skills. These exercises may include timed contour drawing, clothed figure drawing, color theory experiments, and collaborative art-making, all aimed at fostering versatility and creativity.
Critiques play a central role in Studio Art 2, with students engaging in both group discussions and peer feedback sessions. These critiques teach valuable skills in analyzing and articulating ideas about composition, color theory, form, and conceptual visualization. By learning to critique their own work and that of others, students develop a deeper understanding of artistic principles and how to apply them thoughtfully.
A wide range of mediums is explored in this class, including oil-based colored pencils, watercolor paint, acrylic paint, graphite, Micron pens, alcohol markers, chalk pastels, and charcoal. This variety allows students to experiment with different materials and discover the tools that best suit their artistic voice.
Throughout the course, students will build confidence in their ability to think creatively, execute complex projects, and express their ideas visually. Whether refining technical skills or exploring conceptual art-making, Studio Art 2 provides an inspiring and challenging environment for artists to grow and thrive.
